My merrel magnolia has some areas of cracked bark, is full of ants and also these small dark colored spots. Leaves all look healthy.
What could be causing this and how do I tree the tree to protect it and prevent it from reoccurring?

Hi,
It may be that your magnolia is suffering from scale-scales are insects with either soft or hard coverings. In magnolias, the scales produce a sticky subject called honeydew which attracts the ants. The black spots are probably sooty mold. Here is info from the U (scroll all the way down for magnolia scale): https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/scale-insects#soft-scales-on-deciduous-trees-860011
There are treatments, but timing is important.
You might consider having a certified arborist come check your tree: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional
