Blue spruce turning brown and droping needles #648115

Asked June 08, 2020, 10:22 PM EDT

We have 3 blue spruce trees that we planted at about the same time. (within a year of each other) The top of one of the trees is essentially dead. The tree is an estimated 25-30 ft. tall, with the top 4-6 ft brown and dead looking. Is it possible to save the tree? The two near by trees are beginning to show similar signs of dead needles toward the interior of the tree. The pictures are 2 months old. it is worse now.

Hello

The photos that you sent are of Colorado Blue Spruce. These trees have a lot of problems. They are susceptible to several diseases and insect attacks.

I’m attaching an article from Bert Cregg of MSU which explains all the problems that these trees have and why they have them. https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/what_is_spruce_decline_and_what_should_you_do_about_it

I do not know if your trees can be saved but I suggest that you contact a certified arborist at: https://www.treesaregood.org ,the website of the International Arboriculture Society to find an arborist in your area for you to consult.

Good luck with your trees.  Thank you for the question.
