Planted grass seed wondering what is in it? #647263

We planted our whole yard this year. Half we sodded and half we seeded. Depending on where it was. So far all is coming along great. Except for this one area we seeded. Used all the same seed on the parts we seeded, watering the same, grass is coming along great except this area. It’s like something else is in the dirt. We brought in 6 loads of dirt from the same place. Hopefully you can see what it is and help us. Thanks

It is a very common weed. The seeds may have been in your soil or in the load of dirt. From your description it, thankfully, they were in only one spot. The seeds could have blown and only contaminated the top of a plié of dirt, for instance. They are not hard to get rid of and an application of broad leaf weed killer for lawns or a weed and feed product for lawns will get rid of them. Wait until your lawn has established itself before applying it. Use a product for new lawns or use it after the lawn has been mowed 4 times. Follow the label carefully, read it before you buy to make sure the product is the right one.
Here is a fact sheet with common weed photos and information on how to control them. Organic control options are also provided. Pulling them while they are small is hard on the back but effective. Don’t let them flower.
