Asked June 05, 2020, 3:10 PM EDT

What is happening with this young tree? It was planted late last year and had been growing well this Spring. No apparent bugs or worms.

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

There appears to be a mild anthracnose infection as well as physical damage to the leaves, possibly by chewing insects, while they were still emerging from their buds earlier in spring. The cool, damp weather this spring was very conducive to fungal infections like anthracnose, but despite the unsightly symptoms, it generally does not significantly impact the tree's health. No treatments are recommended for either issue, and the tree should be fine. You can rake up and dispose of any fallen leaves, particularly this autumn.
