Honeycrisp Apple Tree Leaves #646481

Asked June 05, 2020, 12:25 PM EDT

Something is chewing on the leaves of my Honeycrisp tree. I don’t see any caterpillars or other larva. I noticed one spider and a couple bee or wasp like insects landing very briefly on the leaves.

Until you can actually see a caterpillar or flying insect I can't guess what it might be. Keep watching closely and check the underside of the leaves to see if it is hiding somewhere. Maybe it has come and gone also. I think it is a little early for Japanese Beetles. Heres a link to info about them. https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/japanese-beetles

Here’s a photo of the caterpillar that seems to be eating the leaves on my apple tree.

I believe that it is a cankerworm. You can hand pick them and drown them. Here is some more info about them. Be sure to open all the links. https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-insects/caterpillars-ornamental-plants
