Tiny white bug on lettuce plants #646250

Asked June 04, 2020, 10:20 PM EDT

What are these tiny white bugs on my lettuce, and how to control them organically? The first photo is for scale, the second picture is a close up of the bug.

I'm sorry, I really can't identify it based on your photo, although I must say you did a great job capturing something so tiny!  The shape and size aren't right for an aphid, and it doesn't look like a whitefly--no flying clouds of white insects when you disturb the lettuce, right?  Not shaped like a spider mite, and it's too big for one--plus you don't have any fine webs, right?  I'm wondering if it's a leafhopper--looks too big for a thrips. Do you see any damage on the lettuce?  If so, can you snap a photo of  it?

Would you say that it's about 1/10 inch--3-4 mm in length?  Does it fly?  Can you try to get a closer photo in focus?

I tried to get some more photos.  There are small also fruit fly type insects in the soil.  They don’t seem to know how to use their wings though.   They are all teeny, about 1.5 mm.  In the photos I saw spiderweb looking fibers.    I had thrown out some lettuce that was just covered with bugs,  it look like tiny paper fibers all over all the leaves no photos of that though.

Your plant looks fine, from what I can see.  In one photo, I do see what looks like an aphid, and the other is possibly a leafhopper, but I can't tell for sure (see photo below).  The white papery flecks on your lettuce were probably from the aphids--they shed their skins when the move up to the next instar (more mature form). We often see that after the aphids have dined and either left or were eaten.  I don't think you need to do anything right now.  Spray the lettuce off with water, and keep a close eye on them.  Keep me posted if anything changes
