Young red oak damaged will it live? #644993

Asked June 02, 2020, 4:03 PM EDT

I Grew a red oak from an acorn last spring (2019) it grew to just under 12cm with 4 sprouted leaves. It lasted Through the winter but early into this spring an animal chewed it removing the top of the tree leaving only 1-2 inches of the trunk. Will it grow? Is it dead?

Expert Response

Hello,

I’m sorry to hear about your tree.  It’s hard to say whether it is alive or not. I suggest that you continue to water it, keeping it moist, not wet. Place it in a shady, safe place and see if it comes back. I commend you on your planting ability at starting the tree.  So, why not try again this fall and monitor it carefully so that critters don't destroy it.

Thanks for sending in the question. Good luck with your tree.

My fingers are crossed too and I want to add that if every person had your curiosity and scientific acumen to produce an oak tree, the world would be a better place.
Thank you.
