Blueberry disease? #644751

Asked June 02, 2020, 10:30 AM EDT

Hi, I have three blueberry bushes that I planted as bare root bushes this winter. They seemed healthy at first, but not two of them have some spotting on the leaves. They are planted in a row, three different kinds, and the one in the middle seems unaffected. The blueberry varieties that have these spots are Herbert and Berkeley. If I remember correctly, the unaffected bush in the middle is the Bluecrop variety. I am an organic gardener, so I don't want to use harsh fungicides, if it turns out it is a fungus. Do you know what is causing this spot? What can I do to help these plants, or should I take them out now so that they don't spread to other more established blueberry bushes in my garden? Thank you so much! I've attached pictures. Elisabeth

Expert Response

Based on these photos it's possible that these plants have picked up a plant virus. There are many viruses that can affect blueberries. One that is common in our area is called Blueberry Shock. This causes shoots to dieback, spots on the leaves and defoliation. The plants do recover and may have a normal growth appearance and fruit production in future years.  It is difficult to be 100% sure just based on looking at the plant's appearance. There are lab-based test that could confirm if a virus is present but the cost is quite high. I wouldn't recommend going that route at this point.

It's possible that there are other factors at play. Can you tell me more about how you prepared the soil prior to planting? Did you do a pH test and/or nutrient analysis of the soil? Did you provide supplemental irrigation after planting, if needed? Was any fertilizer applied at planting or this spring?

Look forward to hearing more information and take care!
