Rug Juniper #643196

Asked May 29, 2020, 6:52 PM EDT

17 yr old Juniper(not sure of type) all green, creeps & grows 5ft or so. Last yr it was beautiful looking&  no issues. This yr it is dying & with a yellow brown orange every where which is planted on 2 "separate" banks of my yard. It looks black on the under side not on the actual stem but on the main stem. Not sure if this is how it should look because I have seen good juniper looking black also. The rug growing on top has new growth.  I Did not see any insects or scale eggs ect. I have pruned the dead off some & wondering if I should fertilize them & if so with what type, I would like a mix that I can spray on because the areas are large. Aprox. 500 sq ft   Greatly Appreciate your help.

Expert Response

Hello, and thanks for using the Ask an Expert System,

It is difficult to diagnose the issue with your juniper with the information you have provided.  Unfortunately, the pandemic has resulted in the closure of all Penn State County Extension offices so at present you cannot take in a sample of your plant material for analysis.

Soil fertility may be an issue, but I recommend a soil test available from Penn State Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory.  You could usually purchase a soil test kit at your extension office, however you can collect a sample and submit it on the forms available on line.

Hopefully, your local Penn State Extension Office will be opening soon.
