Perilla #642023

Asked May 27, 2020, 5:41 PM EDT

I want to make sure this is Perilla before I rip it out. There are similar plants nearby, but this has the square stem, purple veins, and strong smell, but not the smell I remember.

Expert Response

Hi - You are correct. This is beefsteak plant (Perilla frutescens), which is invasive in Maryland. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/view/3735 Thanks for pulling it out.

Thank you! And below is a picture of my reward for battling invasives: blue-eyed grass, which I have not seen to this extent until this year.
