Shady backyard: id a plant, groundcover recommendations #640173

Asked May 24, 2020, 10:08 AM EDT

Hi, Wondering whether this is a weed or something to encourage in my shady woodsy backyard. Also attached image of a muddy area where grass doesn't grow. When it rains, water runs down this area. Any recommendations of a good groundcover? (shade)

Expert Response

It looks like sweet woodruff. It would be a good ground cover for shade. https://extension.sdstate.edu/sweet-woodruff-attractive-groundcover-shady-gardens Here is some good info about gardening in the shade. https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/gardening-shade . The wet area could be a rain garden area as well. https://extension.umn.edu/landscape-design/rain-gardens
