Asked May 20, 2020, 9:40 PM EDT
I have a tree approximately 5 feet in diameter its a massive maple .. . Is it safe for me to use the bolt method to stop it from splitting any further or will that cause to much stress?
Thank you!

The tree has a very poor form and will continue to split. In fact, it looks like it might really be more than one tree that grew together and now are basically falling over. Maples don't normally get 5' wide and the branching is indicative of more than one trunk.
You really need to have a professional arborist look at your tree. See http://www.myminnesotawoods.umn.edu/2009/01/finding-tree-care-help-certified-arborists-and-mn-tree-care-advisors/. They can advise you if pruning can be done to save the tree(s) or if it needs to be removed.
