Yellow Leaves Falling Off Holly Trees #638518

Asked May 20, 2020, 3:41 PM EDT

I have 5 holly trees in my yard, 1 Nellie Stevens and 4 other larger hollies, I'm not sure of the type. They all have some yellowing leaves, some of which are falling off. Is this due to the abnormally wet spring we have had or do I have another problem, such as a soil or pest problem. How do I go about rectifying this problem? Thanks, Scott

Hi - Holly trees normally drop some old leaves at this time of year. The leaves first turn yellow and often become spotted with various fungal spots as they weaken,
preparing to drop. It is all normal. This explains

Even though hollies are evergreen, they still drop old leaves. If they put out a lot of
leaves in a particular year, then a few years later when that year's leaves are old, the
tree will seem to be dropping more leaves than usual.
