Invasive grass in lawn #637776

Asked May 19, 2020, 9:57 AM EDT

I would like to identify a grass that has invaded my bluegrass lawn and is spreading. It started as a small spot a couple of years ago and every year it spreads to more areas. It is a fine textured grass that is a very light green as compared to the bluegrass. I would like to know what it is and how to control or get rid of it.

It may be possible to identify the grass by digging up a small clump of the grass (including the root system) and taking several close-up photos of the grass. Key identification characteristics of grass are quite small, so the photos must be clear and sharp. Send the photos to <personal data hidden>

Unfortunately, we are unable to identify the grass in the photos. Key identification features are not visible in the photos.

We will need an actual plant specimen for identification.Dig up a 4- to 5-inch clump of the grass, carefully shake off most of the soil, wrap the grass in dry paper toweling, place it in a plastic bag, and send to Extension Horticulture, 2206 Osborne Drive, Ames, Iowa 50011. Include a note with your name and e-mail address.

Mail service on campus is rather unpredictable.  Hopefully it will arrive in a timely manner.
