Snake skin identification #637485

Asked May 18, 2020, 3:59 PM EDT

I found this snake skin while walking my dog. I live in Maryland, and the snakeskin was about 6 ft long. What kind of snake in Maryland grow so long? Does anybody know by looking at the skin what kind of snake it could be?

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

We are not able to positively ID the species of snake from the shed and photos, but due to its size, it could be an Eastern Ratsnake, a species ubiquitous to MD. They are harmless to humans and feed on a variety of small mammals and bird eggs.
