Black Knot on Wild Cherry Trees #636990

Asked May 17, 2020, 6:30 PM EDT

Hi, We recently moved to a property in North Branch, MN and there are a number of wild cherry trees in the yard (and some in the woods) with extensive black knot. I took down a couple of the worst looking ones over the winter, but it will take a long time to get them all. I would like to plant apple trees in the front yard, and am wondering if the black knot will affect those trees at all? Should I wait to plant apple trees until I have all the black knot trees taken care of? Thanks for any advice! Stay healthy, - Nell Gelhaus

Expert Response

Black Knot affect prunus trees.  Apple trees are malus, a different species.  They should not be affected by the fungal disease of the cherry trees.
