inkberry holly leaves turning brown #630850

Asked May 04, 2020, 10:07 AM EDT

Inkberry holly bushes that were planted last fall seemed to be doing well, but they now have many brown leaves with black spots. What can I do to keep them healthy?

Hollies normally drop some old leaves this time of year. The leaves first turn yellow and often become spotted with various fungal spots as they weaken, preparing to drop. It is all normal. This page on our website explains further: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/normal-leaf-shedding

Even though hollies are evergreen, they still drop old leaves. If they put out a lot of leaves in a particular year, then a few years later when that year's leaves are old, the
shrub will seem to be dropping more leaves than usual. There is nothing you need to do about it but give it time.

Make sure you don't have too much mulch around the plant. Mulch should be no more than 2-3" deep and it should not be directly up against the stems of the plant. Keep the plant healthy by watering if we get into a period of drought later this season.
