Can you tell me what kind of tree this is?

Hi--this is just a guess because the photo you sent doesn't give us much to go on! It looks like it might be a Sweetgum tree, Liquidambar styraciflua. It's a gorgeous shade tree with leaves similar to a maple, and the fall color it provides is absolutely stunning. The spiky fruits it produces, which can stay on the tree all winter, can be quite painful if you step on them with bare feet!  I am unfamiliar with the climate in your county in NM.  I would assume that you would have to water the tree during the hot summers there to keep it healthy and happy. I would really appreciate it if you could send us photos of the tree when it leafs out so we'll know if our answer is correct.

Too bad--I love sweetgums.  The leaves should have come out by now.
