Please help me diagnose the problem with this 150 year old Magnolia tree and advise me if it can be saved. Since late winter/early spring the leaves on the west side of the tree have been dying. The leaves on the east side of the tree are green and small flower buds are forming.
Rumor says that it was planted by a civil war soldier before he left for war.
My husband want to schedule its removal asap.

We mourn with you the possible loss of such a stately specimen Magnolia.
It's not truly possible to diagnose from afar what it's main problems are.
While it doesn't look promising, if it is important to you, we would suggest having an on-site consult with a certified arborist (a tree health expert. The 'ISA' International Society of Arboriculture is the credentialing agency) to see what their recommendations would be.
Most large tree companies have one on staff or you can search for one at www.treesaregood.org
