Starting hollyhock seeds indoors #625781

Asked April 20, 2020, 3:23 PM EDT

I am a beginner with starting seeds indoors. I have some hollyhock seeds from my last year garden I saved. Two questions: 1). Can I use potting soil to start the seedlings? 2) Do I need to soak the hollyhock seeds before putting them in the soil? Thanks

It would be best if you just direct sow them into the space where you want them. Keep in mind that a more sheltered, out of the wind location is best since they get so tall. If you seed them now when the soil warms to the correct temp they will germinate and grow. They reseed themselves that way every year.  Try to space them out about a foot and only put about a 1/4 inch of soil over the seed. You can put a couple of seeds every 6-12 inches,
