Chickens in Henrico County #624958

Asked April 17, 2020, 4:49 PM EDT

Happy Friday! I hope everyone is doing well. I have one of the dumbest questions you've probably had. Do you know the ordinances for keeping 2-3 chickens in my backyard? I live in Short Pump and would love to have a couple but no Rooster. Thank you and please stay as safe as possible. Babette McNeely

Good afternoon.

Unfortunately, Henrico County ordinances are a little behind the time. Information about the distance requirement can be found here: https://henrico.us/pdfs/countyattorney/Chpt024Zoning.pdf

It will take you to Chapter 24 of the county’s code (Zoning Ordinance). You’ll want to refer to Section 24-11 (c), which also refers to Section 24-10.a., which handles distance requirements. Chickens would fall under this ordinance.

Henrico County is updating the zoning and subdivision ordinances. Public participation will be a vital part of this process. To learn about the project and upcoming meetings visit the Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance Update website .
