Can yellow jackets invade mason bee houses? #624145

Asked April 14, 2020, 8:28 PM EDT

I’ve seen one bee with yellow-looking stripes going in/out of the mason bee tubes. Could it be a mason be with color? Or is it a yellow jacket that I need to kill so it doesn’t affect the cocoons.

Expert Response

The insect in the photo is not a yellowjacket. It could very easily be a mason bee. The male bees can have more yellow on their bodies.

You might find the publication, “Common Bee Pollinators of Oregon Crops” from the Oregon Department of Agriculture useful to have on hand. Another handy publication for bee identification is, “Guide to Common Pollinators in the Willamette Valley in Western Oregon” from OSU.  You will see some variation in the coloring of mason bees. Now one final resource for you is the “Bee Notes” from the Linn County Master Gardeners. Look for it under the “Pollinators” tab. They are a valuable resource for everything related to mason bees.
