Hydrangea Borers #623447

Asked April 12, 2020, 3:22 PM EDT

Hello, I was trimming back some dead canes on a hydrangea today and found a few that had holes in the middle. I thought it was just the dead wood drying out until i cut further down and saw these (photo attached) metallic blue insects popping out from the cut portions. They look like some sort of really small flying ant, but I've read online these might be a small type of carpenter bee? I tried cutting the canes down as far as I could to get to a portion where the center was undisturbed, but some of them seem to go right to the base of the plant and I can't cut any further. Any suggestions on how to deal with these guys? My hydrangea struggled a bit last year so i'm thinking maybe these had something to do with it? Thanks!

Expert Response

Hello. What an interesting photo, thank you for including it. I suspect this is a borer, did you notice any round or D shaped exit holes on any of the canes? It sounds like you have done some research and as you have probably found out, insecticides are not very effective against borers. The best advice I have seen is to continue cutting down the canes and after a few seasons perhaps the infestation can be brought under control. Borers often attack shrubs/trees that are already stressed so make sure the hydrangea is not hurt by lawnmowers/string trimmers, no mulch touching the bark and try to keep weeds and grass from growing over the root ball. I hope this helps.

Hi-

Yes, what caught my eye was that branches that were dead and I intended to cut back had been cut last season and had circular tunnels down the middle of the cane. I'll try keeping a closer eye on it this year and cut off damaged canes as I notice them. I've also read putting glue on the ends of the fresh cuts can help deter the borers as well- any thoughts on trying that?

Thanks so much for your help!

Sorry I find no research based info about glue on the canes so I can not recommend it. Good luck!
