What are the best varieties of strawberries to plant in Northeast Ohio. Also what months our best to plant them. I have some experience in vegetable and crop growing, but not in strawberries.

I would try to find dormant strawberry plants that are certified virus free. There are ever-bearing varieties that produce a crop in the fall of first year and fall and spring after that. You want to remove flowers until mid July the first year and you should plan to start over with new plants after the third year.  With June bearing plants you should remove all flowers the first year of planting so the plants will produce berries the next Spring. My list of selections is old but June bearing Surecrop is verticillium wilt resistant and bears mid-season. Robinson is a long time standard and bears late season. In ever bearing varieties there is Superfection and Ozark Beauty. But there are surely newer ones available. You may begin planting as soon as the ground can be worked. Buy dormant plants and trim the roots to about 4 inches long and soak the roots in water just a short time. Space between plants should be about 18 inches. If planted too deep the roots will rot and if too high they will dry out and wither. The crown should be just about soil level. Grubs can be a problem.  And you might need to mulch the plants to give them winter protection. You will need to start over after 3 years unless you can grow new plants on runners to use. If not, then destroy the original plants and begin again. God luck
