What is black bark on Western Hemlock tree? #618497

Asked March 24, 2020, 12:45 PM EDT

Wondered what a patch of black bark at base and roots of my western hemlock tree is. The tree is about 10" in diameter, maybe 30 feet tall, and is half shaded by larger trees next to it. The black portion is not oozing, and no mushrooms growing out of it. It is not growing in a wet area. Three photos below show black bark portion.

Expert Response

I do not know what is causing the black stain on the bark. It could be related to an internal problem, perhaps a healed over injury. If the tree is showing signs of decline dieback or yellowing of foliage, further investigation may be warranted. If the tree is otherwise healthy in appearance, you could just wait to see how it does this next growing season.
