Hi - Cankerworms are starting to appear in Gaston County now.  You can find them dropping on thin strands of webbing, particularly from large oak trees.  They look similar to your photos, only they are usually greener.

Can you tell me more about where you are finding these?  Are the dropping from trees?  If so, what species of tree?
