Cedar tree white mold #610702

Asked January 17, 2020, 11:24 AM EST

My friend has two cedar trees that have a white mold growing around the base of each one. What could be the possible issue? Should they be removed? They are very tall and close to a few homes. Thank you.

Expert Response

Hello, I am not 100% sure what this fungus is, but we've had reports of similar signs this winter. We do not think this fungus is killing the tree or impacting tree health. If the crowns still look healthy, this is likely not something to worry about.

It is possible to get the fungus identified via the Oregon State Univ plant clinic. There is a fee. But here is the website. If you want this identified, I would call the plant clinic, or email a picture then call, and ask about how to collect a specimen so the can identify it.  https://bpp.oregonstate.edu/plant-clinic

Since the tree is close to your house, you may want to have an arborist evaluate the tree.
