What Is This Small Black Beetle Found On My Firewood. #610658

Asked January 16, 2020, 6:46 PM EST

I found a bunch of these small bug/beetles in my firewood that I just threw inside our wood bin. Are they something that I have to worry about getting through my house?

Expert Response

I am unable to identify the insect in the pictures. I would suggest you get a sample to the entomology lab at Penn State for I.D. and suggestions on how to control. You can do this by wither taking a sample to your local extension office and filling out a form or you can download the form and mail the sample in yourself. Info on how to do this can be found here:  https://ento.psu.edu/extension

I did a little digging myself and found that it’s a “Black Walnut Beetle”. Does not harm house wood. They prefer live Walnut trees. Thank you for the advice. I may still send a sample out to confirm.
