Is ajuga, pidgeonberry or frogfruit poisonous to dogs? #609562

Asked January 03, 2020, 12:53 PM EST

I am looking for ground cover safe for little dogs to run through. Specifically interested in knowing about frogfruit or ajuga. Can you tell me if these are safe?

 Also interested in planting pidgeonberry.

Thank you.

Expert Response

Ajuga repens and frog fruit are non-toxic. The leaves and berries of Pidegeonberry are poisonous, except to birds.

Not poisonous, but if they eat enough of it it will make them sick. But they shouldn't be eating it in the first place.

Right..I think the same thing about some other toxic plants. Sorry to hear about pidgeonberry. Do you know if dogs are inclined towards eating them, or dare you comment..I'd understand. We played around Oleanders all the time as kids...who knew?

I'm not sure if dogs are inclined to eat pidgeonberry. Some of our Hill Country Master Gardeners here might have it growing in their yards and have dogs. You can maybe ask if they've had any issues. Their phone number is 830.257.6568 .
Much closer to you would be the Llano Master Gardeners. They would be good to ask too. Call them at<personal data hidden>. I think they are also having a program on February 29th at the Llano Library. You might be able to catch one in person there.
