What is this yellow stuff on the soil and what do I do about it? #608965

I was given this lovely split leaf philodendren that was root bound. I repotted with new potting soil and leaf gro. The plant perked up and looked better week by week. this summer I noticed mushrooms on the soil that dissolved into this yellow stuff. Now the leaves are turning yellow and dying. Anything that i can do to restore it to health?

Thank you for your question. This appears to be a fungus common in houseplants. It grows upon potting soil rich in organic matter. It is less common where the soil is not kept constantly moist. The chlorosis (yellowing) results from a nutritional deficiency. Here is an Extension article about houseplant care that may provide directions: http://chemung.cce.cornell.edu/gardening/houseplants
Good luck!
