What is overwintering on my forsythia? #608107

I was hanging Christmas decorations on my large forsythia bush and found a little cocoon like bulge attached to one of the branches. Its about an inch long and soft (I gently touched it).

That is the egg case (technically known as an 'ootheca') for a type of praying mantis.
