1. How can I tell the difference of damage from termites vs carpenter ants? A basement floor beam is punky due to channels going thru it. The damage is the entire length of a 20ftx12"x2" beam 2. How long does it take to chew this much? 3.How do I find a reputable exterminator? How do I know they are good?

Expert Response

Termites chew along the grain of the wood, while carpenter ants chew with and against the grain. With carpenter ants, you will see frass, a sawdust like material with chewed up insect fragments mixed in, as they are not eating the wood, only excavating it. You will not see this with termites. Also, carpenter ants prefer moist wood, have you had a leak recently? Termites create mud tubes which aides in preventing desiccation. Do you see any mud tubes anywhere? First and foremost, you want a licensed applicator, you can verify that a company is licensed through the Ohio Dept of Agriculture @<personal data hidden>. It is always good to ask for references as well.  Here are a few factsheets for your reference.  Thanks.

Thanks for the info sheet on carpenter ants, but it's clear I have termites.  Where can I find info on termite treatments and the latest chemicals and techniques?  A lot of exterminators are licensed, but how do I tell a good one from average?  I'm not sure reviews are all that helpful because it can be years before one knows the critters were really exterminated.  Thanks
