I purchased a bag of honey crisp apples and found they have brown patches scattered throughout. The flesh that is white seems crisp. What causes this, and are they still edible?

Thank you for your question.
Here is the response from the Extension expert....."It looks like internal browning to me, which is caused by exposure to cool temperatures during the growing season. The disorder gets worse during storage."

More info from the expert.... "The unaffected flesh will probably still be edible. The brown flesh will probably not taste very good - maybe have an alcoholic smell and off-flavors."
