Hi
I run a community garden in Brooklyn. Our lilac tree seems to have a disease that we cannot identify. Older branches are turning a dark black and have what looks like a fungus growing from cracks in the bark. All the leaves on the branch die and fall off. I am attaching photos. Is there anything we can do about this?
Thanks

Expert Response
Hello,
I think the white material coming out of the cracks is frass from a lilac borer. Remove some of the debris to see if their is a hole underneath. See the extension fact sheet at the link.
