Weeds or Wildflowers? #598149

Asked September 20, 2019, 5:56 PM EDT

These two pretty flowers have almost taken over one of my gardens. I didn’t plant them so I’m curious. Thank You, Nancy McNulty

Expert Response

The first is a New England aster. See https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/new-england-aster) .

The second looks like white snakeroot. See https://www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/white-snakeroot and https://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/woodland/plants/wh_snakeroot.htm. It is poisonous to animals that eat it.

They both are wildflowers that spread so quickly they are often considered weeds.
