White spots on red maple branches #597396

Asked September 17, 2019, 12:40 PM EDT

I recently noticed several white rings on the lower branches of a 60 yr old red maple tree in my yard. What should I do about this?

Expert Response

Appears to be lichen growth, possibly the growth habit of the tree, or even stretch marks on the bark, such as in pregnancy.  Whichever, it is cosmetic and harmless to the tree. Here's more on lichens:   https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/what_are_lichens_and_what_are_they_doing_on_my_tree
