Deadly Nightshade Plants #597088

Asked September 16, 2019, 1:50 PM EDT

Can your office positively identify Deadly Nightshade plants for me? I believe I have some growing near my garden in Yoder, east of Springs. Can I bring a plant to your office tomorrow for someone to look at and possibly identify?  Several years ago we lost our Bull Mastiff dog after he ate some of it.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question about identifying your deadly nightshade plants. I am very sorry to hear your dog was poisoned after eating this plant. We, as Colorado Master Gardeners, cannot give advice that could be considered by the client as medical in nature. This includes poisonous plants.

You can call 520-7690 and ask if there is someone in our El Paso County Extension office who can answer your question.

You can also call the El Paso County Colorado Community Services Department Environmental Division to see if they can provide you with an answer.   I suggest calling them first to see if you can email a picture or bring in a sample.
