Blackish Maple Tree Trunks #594901

Asked September 06, 2019, 12:55 PM EDT

I noticed my Deborah maple looked like a large branch at the canopy was in decline. The leaves are limp and turning color ahead of the other branches so I went to investigate under the canopy and noticed there is a black mold or fungus growth all over the trunk leading to the top of the tree. What is this and how do I treat the tree?

Expert Response

I suggest you have a certified arborist make a house call. I see from your photo that there are also branches that have lost their bark. Your tree needs to be inspected in person. You can find an arborist by going to this site and clicking on Find An Arborist. Once your location and zip code information is entered, a list of certified arborists in your area will appear.  http://www.treesaregood.org/
