Remove stressed oak tree to prevent disease? #594161

Asked September 03, 2019, 2:47 PM EDT

I have an oak with 3 main trunks that Y at ground level. One of the Y's has a large crack that almost completely separates the 2 trunks and it's over 1" in spots. We've already lost a few oaks to a borer and I'm thinking I should remove this tree because it's stressed and may attract bugs / disease. Do you recommend it be removed for this reason? Also, the 3rd trunk must be somewhat hollow at it's base because it appears the squirrels are in there (storing nuts?). Should this one be taken down too? Assuming the other 2 trunks will be removed, maybe it should be removed because of the stress of removing the others? Thanks, Eric

Expert Response

There are several issues in the picture. Therefore, only an onsite inspection by an arborist can answer whether any part of this tree is worth saving. They will measure the depth of the cracks and check the root structure. The following website will help you to find a certified tree care professional. They usually don’t charge for a first visit. Removing it to prevent disease is not a usual strategy. See: https://extension.umn.edu/planting-and-growing-guides/how-hire-tree-care-professional
