Elm tree leaves have brown spots and holes #592561

Asked August 27, 2019, 3:58 PM EDT

For the past 3 years, our elm tree leaves have brown spots and holes on every leaf. The tree leafs out really well in the spring but then develops these spots and holes. I have been unable to see any insects or anything on the leaves. We're wondering if there's any chance to save the tree or if we need to cut it down. Thank you!

Hi,
Thank you for your question. You definitely do not have to remove your elm! This damage is most likely being caused by the elm leaf beetle, a common pest on elm trees in Colorado. See the following fact sheet for control options (they can be very effective!): https://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/insect/05521.pdf

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
