This beautiful spider was on our front porch. I'm hoping it's not poisonous.

Douglas County Colorado

Expert Response

It looks like one of the banded garden spiders, see https://webdoc.agsci.colostate.edu/bspm/InsectInformation/FactSheets/BandedGardenSpider.pdf for details on a similar species. http://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/spiders-in-the-home-5-512/ gives details on other common Colorado spiders.

It is not poisonous.

Thank you for your response. However, the spider at my house has a lovely aqua back, not white. It doesn't show up too well in the picture. Also, its back does not have bands on it. It's more marbled. So I'm wondering if it still fits within the category of a Whitebacked Garden Spider.?

Sorry, I meant to say that this is one of the garden spiders, not specifically the whitebacked species.

I'm not sure I've seen that particular coloration before.

Thanks.  It's good to know it's a garden spider and not poisonous. It's the most beautiful spider I've ever seen. Its back looks almost like a turquoise stone one would use to make jewelry.
