15 yr weeping cherry tree dead. Fungus or lantern fly #589474

Asked August 15, 2019, 8:36 PM EDT

Our tree has a large trunk canker that an arborist id ‘d as fungus. (It is black and gooey). This spring produced beautiful and bountiful pink blooms. By mid July the leaves were turning brown in spots and now, the tree is completely bare/ dead. We have lantern flies. Do the lantern flies kill weeping cherry trees? Could it be a combination of both fungus and insects causing the very sudden demise? Thanks

Expert Response

Your weeping cherry is likely suffering from multiple causes including canker, brown rot, and/or leaf spot based on the information you submitted. Spotted lanternfly typically attacks hardwood and fruit trees. Flowing sap may be indicative of damage from the spotted lanternfly.
Weeping cherries are susceptible to all of the above diseases but your tree may bounce back next year. Prune out any infected branches with cankers or weeping sap in the interim and try a fungicide application.
