Black and White Fly #586445

Asked August 05, 2019, 10:36 AM EDT

Hi Guys   Found this on the back deck. Your website has the only pictures of anything even close. I have never seen a black and white banded fly before. Do you know what this is and if they are rare?

 Thank you

Expert Response

This looks like a hover fly (aka syrphid fly).  The immature stages of these flies are important predators of small insects, especially aphids.  Most of the ones that I see are more black and yellow, but there certainly are black and white species, as well.
