Is it knotweed? #583130

Asked July 24, 2019, 1:04 PM EDT

This plant showed up in an area of our property that we have been naturalizing, and is very aggressive. I never noticed it before last summer, but it has now come to dominate a large part of our micro-prairie. Should I be concerned?

Expert Response

Hi. My first thought is to say no but more info would help. The part that makes me hesitant is where the leaf and stem meet-yours seems rounded and knotweed is usually a bit flatter. Are the stems hollow? Have you seen flowers yet this season? I am also wondering if you could send a photo of the plant in the field. Thank you very much.

Thanks so much for your response, Marcia. The stems are not hollow, and no, I haven't seen the plant flower this season. I'm attaching a couple photos of the plants in the field. Thanks again for your time and expertise!

Hi. If no hollow stems then it is not knotweed! The raceme looking stem at the top of the plant should help ID it when the stem develops a little further. Feel free to send me another picture if that changes. Thanks.
