Expert Response
This weed is called catchweed bedstraw (Galium aparine). Catchweed bedstraw is
a winter annual or summer annual plant that is native to Michigan. It reproduces exclusively by seed.
Due to the proximity to the raspberries control with a herbicide at this point is not advised. The best strategy is likely to remove as much as possible by hand before flowering or seed dispersal. After this year it would be advised to use a preemergence herbicide during the early spring to help prevent this weed from coming up from the seedbank. Preemergence herbicides labeled for use in raspberry include the following.
