When a mature plant appears to die very suddenly, it has typically been in decline for some time and then it hits a "tipping point" -- such as the very hot weather we're having -- and then you see the sudden change in appearance. When a whole plant is affected like this, it is typically the result of damage to the root system or the trunk. It is certainly unfortunate; there is nothing you can do but replace the plant.
