Can my locust tree be saved? #580328

Asked July 15, 2019, 3:09 PM EDT

I had a large limb split on my locust tree during the recent storm. I just cut it off and lost about 1/5 of the canopy. The split extends into another large branch.  I am wondering if the rest of the tree can be saved or should I cut it all down and plant something new. It is about 50 years old.

It is difficult to make a definitive judgement based on three photographs.  You may be able to enjoy the tree for a few more years by removing the large branch that was damaged when the adjacent branch split.

I would contact a certified arborist and have them make an onsite visit.  They might see potential problems not visible in the photographs.  They could also give you estimates on the removal of the large branch and the entire tree (whichever you decide).
