fertile figs #579712

Asked July 13, 2019, 1:07 PM EDT

After buying a fig tree I found out that I should grow it in a pot because there are bacteria in the first inch of the ground in South Florida that will kill the plant. So I have it in a pot but I have it in my screened porch. my whole yard is screened. Is there any particular kind of fertilizer I should use to nourish my fig tree? Different people tell me different things about fertalizer when growing inside a screened in yard because of the defussed light. Can you please tell me what I really need to know? Thanks

Thank you for your question, Sal. Here is a Florida Extension article on figs: http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/sarasota/ I can find no Florida information about soil issues, but this Texas article discusses soil (root) nematodes, among others: https://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/fruit-nut/files/2010/10/figs.pdf I think it is helpful to know region-specific plant issues, so if you have other questions, you can contact your own county Extension office here: http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/sarasota/ Good luck!
