Egg casings and bugs on my clematis seed head #579391

Asked July 12, 2019, 1:45 PM EDT

I have a picture of some tiny little egg sacs and some little bugs, I have no idea what they are and I’m trying to figure out if they are friend or foe

Yamhill County Oregon

Expert Response

Those are stink bug immatures hatching out of their eggs. I can’t be sure from the picture but they appear to be brown Marmorated stink bugs, which is a new and serious invasive pest in North America, including Oregon, and unfortunately clematis is one of its many host. To be certain of the identification, you can take samples to the Yamhill extension office. This website has information on brown Marmorated stink bugs and their management. https://www.stopbmsb.org/index.cfm
