Possible Hogweed #575068

Asked June 28, 2019, 4:35 PM EDT

Can someone ID this plant that I took photos of on 05/21/19? It was about 10 feet tall growing in the meadow at Oregon Ridge Nature Center. I thought it was Queen Anne's Lace, but it was much larger. I do not have a loose shot to show scale.

This looks like common cow parsnip (https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=2350) but double check the stems. Giant hogweed looks very similar to this. Check the stem to see if there are purple blotches. If there are purple blotches, it is giant hogweed. From your photo, it does not look like it has the blotches but look further down on the stem (without touching any part of the plant).

Refer to the following page which has good photos of both plants and other look-alikes. https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/72766.html

If you see the purple spots, let us know. Giant hogweed has to be reported to the Maryland Department of Agriculture and they will provide information on how to control it.
